Because 8 mansions feng shui is an extension of san he (三合) feng shui, the classification of a residence is based on the sitting. This is unlike san yuan (三元) feng shui where the facing is usually taken as the reference point.
A house sitting on south will have it’s sitting on the Li palace. Which is why it is termed as a Li house with gua number 9.
This puts it under the classification belonging to the East Group of houses. With the favorable directions of north, south, east and southeast. With the remaining directions of west, northwest, northeast and southwest being the unfavorable directions.

The fuwei sector, understandably sits on the south. With the most auspicious sector of sheng qi situated at the east, taking the spiritual home of the dragon.
For a house facing north and sitting south, the only viable location of a main door located at the facing of the property is at the north. If the door shifts to the left towards jue ming or to the right towards huo hai, then residents can look forward to a lack of good fortune since the main energy coming from the main door would be from a source of negative energy.
When the house has a main entrance at it’s side, which is common especially for corner units of clustered landed homes, then the best location would be at the right side since that is where the sheng qi area is found.
Since the kitchen, which is one of the primary living areas of a residence, should ideally be planned at an unfavorable sector, then the most appropriate sectors are the northeast and southwest.
This is because even though the west and northwest are inauspicious sectors according to 8 mansions, the trigrams associated with these 2 palaces are Dui and Qian. Both of which has a fundamental element base of metal. With the kitchen naturally bring fire energy into a living space, it is not ideal to put it in these 2 locations due to the generic clash between the elements of fire and metal.
The best locations for bedrooms are the north, south and southeast on all the different levels of the property.
